Challenge
Following a power-related incident, the client's Dell PowerEdge T320 server lost visibility of the RAID controller and connected storage devices within iDRAC. This reduced infrastructure visibility and increased the risk of undetected hardware failures. The legacy Hyper-V environment also hosted several business-critical workloads including Active Directory, SQL Server, web services, FTP services and application servers, requiring remediation without disrupting production.
Approach
A structured remediation plan was carried out beginning with health checks across Hyper-V hosts, virtual machines, storage and event logs. Backup integrity was verified before maintenance commenced. Dell iDRAC and Lifecycle Controller firmware were upgraded to restore hardware monitoring functionality, followed by validation of RAID controller health and storage visibility. SQL Server storage utilisation was reviewed, oversized transaction logs were reduced to reclaim disk capacity, and post-maintenance testing confirmed that Hyper-V services, virtual machines and business-critical workloads remained fully operational.
Outcome
The project successfully restored full iDRAC management functionality, allowing hardware components and storage devices to be monitored correctly once again. Infrastructure health was validated across the Hyper-V environment, SQL Server storage utilisation was significantly improved through transaction log optimisation, backup systems were verified, and the client gained improved infrastructure visibility, reclaimed storage capacity and a more stable, supportable virtual server platform.
